SSL Renewal and Expiry Issues Print

  • 0

Prerequisites

  • An active domain name

  • Access to SmartHostee client area or cPanel

  • Administrative access to the server or hosting account

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Check SSL Expiry

  1. Log in to your SmartHostee client area or cPanel.

  2. Navigate to SSL/TLS Manager or SSL Certificates section.

  3. Locate the certificate and check the expiry date.

Most SSL certificates are valid for 1 year, while some may be valid up to 2 years.

Step 2: Renew the SSL Certificate

  1. In the SSL section, click Renew for the expiring certificate.

  2. Confirm the domain name for the certificate.

  3. Complete payment if required (some certificates are free via Let’s Encrypt).

  4. Follow prompts to generate a new CSR (Certificate Signing Request) if needed.

Step 3: Install the Renewed Certificate

  1. After renewal, download the renewed SSL files (certificate, CA bundle, private key).

  2. In cPanel, go to Install SSL on a Domain.

  3. Paste or upload the renewed certificate files.

  4. Click Install Certificate.

cPanel and most automated hosting platforms may handle this step automatically for free SSL certificates.

Step 4: Verify Installation

  • Open your website in a browser and check for the secure padlock icon.

  • Use online tools such as SSL Labs to confirm proper installation.

Common SSL Renewal Issues

  • Expired SSL: Users see browser warnings and insecure site notifications.

  • Incorrect domain or CSR: Renewal fails if the domain or certificate signing request does not match.

  • Old certificate still active: Clear browser cache or server cache after renewal.

  • DNS propagation delays: Domain must resolve correctly before SSL can validate.

Best Practices

  • Enable auto-renewal for SSL certificates whenever available

  • Renew SSL at least 2–4 weeks before expiry to avoid downtime

  • Monitor expiration notifications via your client area

  • Keep accurate domain ownership and WHOIS information for validation

Expected Outcome

Your website’s SSL certificate will be renewed and installed correctly, ensuring uninterrupted secure connections, no browser warnings, and continued visitor trust.
